Few people among us really know what actually they are doing in their daily life in terms of psychology. Psychology is everywhere, in each and every aspect of humans, there exists psychology. We tend to know each other in a better way when we know certain psychologies related to our actions. When we talk about actions, there are certain Defense Mechanisms which are used by us in our daily lives just to get relief from anxiety. These defense mechanisms were first introduced by Sigmund Freud in his psychoanalytic theory. These are basically some tactics which are developed by ego to protect against anxiety. There are some feelings and thoughts that are too difficult for the conscious mind to cope with, so in order to safeguard the mind against those feelings and thoughts, these defense mechanisms are used. But before we go into the detail, its important to mention that every defense mechanism is NOT healthy.
1) Displacement: It involves taking out the frustration, impulses and feelings on other people (spouse, children, servants etc) or objects which poses no threat. The common example of displacement is displaced aggression. For instance you had a bad day at your office, now instead of taking out all that anger and frustration on your boss, you will express your anger towards a person or object that poses no threat. This is an unhealthy defense mechanism and should be avoided.
2) Aim Inhibition: This defense mechanism works on the quote “Something is better than nothing”. In this type of defense mechanism, the person opt or go for a modified form of what they want or what is their goal. For example a student who wanted to be a professional athlete became a high school football coach. This is a healthy defense mechanism and allows you to think out side the box.
3) Sublimation: It is a type of defense mechanism in which a person converts harmful impulses in to socially acceptable behavior. For instance a students who likes to argue a lot joins a debating society. or a persons who fights on small things adopt the profession of mix martial arts. This type of defense mechanism is healthy as well as non healthy, depending on the person and how he uses it.
